 SIX NATIONS UPDATE DAY 62

“I WANNA GO HOME.  I WANNA GO HOME…”  DAY 62, SIX NATIONS UPDATE: SUNDAY, APRIL 30, 2006.

MNN.  April 30, 2006.  Late into the night we can hear singing from the nearby OPP camp, “I wanna go, I wanna go home .. to Hamilton, Toronto, Brantford, Oakville, Burlington, Guelph, Kitchener, Waterloo, London … I wanna go to my home on Rotino’shon:ni land".  We hope they’re starting to see the illegality and futility of their mission to sit like a bunch of ground hogs watching and waiting in the hope that we’ll do something that will give them an excuse to attack us.  How can the public afford to have 1000 OPP, 250 RCMP and the Canadian army at the ready when Canada is completely in default?  They should just sit down and work out with us how to right the wrongs.

Lenin says that you are in a "police state" when the cops earn more than the teachers.  They say in Toronto a beginner cop with a high school education before police college gets $82,000.  A teacher gets $38,000.  So, folks, wake up and look at what’s happening.  Tasers are worse than truncheons.

This is day 62 of our protest.  Today the OPP has a barricade 30 ft. in front of ours at the site of the illegal Henco Industries housing project at Caledonia.  We go over and chat with to them and share coffees.  They stop all vehicles coming and going, especially emergency ones.  The bigger reason is to stop the angry Caledonia residents from rushing our barricade and attacking us, so they tell us.  They must be really happy that the locals got out of hand.  They seem to have forgotten that there were no problems between us until the cops showed up.

We have had many threats to take us down.  The OPP advanced over us in a predawn attack on April 20th.  We fought them hand to hand, took our land back and kicked them off.  They went away mad and got reinforcements of more heavily armed OPP, RCMP and the Canadian Army.  They formed a 50 sq. mile perimeter around us.  Helicopters are flying overhead constantly.  Parabolic microphones listen to everything we say.  Infra-red imaging follows everyone, including the dogs and the gophers.  There’s high tech everywhere.  They treat us like animals in a zoo!  Is that what they think we are?  Our people need night vision goggles just like the police so we can watch their movements too.  The Caledonia rioters have come a few times to try to rush our barricades.  We remain unarmed and vigilant.  More than ever we continue to need your support and to come and stand with us in solidarity at the site (Highway 6 and 6th Line, 20 minutes south of Hamilton Ontario Canada).

We want Canada and Ontario to obey the laws and promises that were made that there would never ever be any encroachment on our territory.  They were to never steer our canoe and they would always remain in their boat.  Today we are squeezed onto 5 % of our land base, while Canada’s largest cities and towns are illegally sitting on our land.  Besides the outright theft, there are outstanding rents, leases and unfulfilled obligations we have been fighting for in the last 200 years.

The media is still concentrating on the angry Caledonia residents probably hoping for an incident that would justify moving the army closer.  The people of Six Nations and our allies behind the lines and the scenes continue to make progress of a more significant nature.

We’d like to assure you that we are not sitting idly.  Our Law is alive!  We can see it working on many levels.  We are using our own process.  Clans, chiefs, men and women and the people are working together.  We are all carrying out our responsibilities.  We continue to support those people who are under a great deal of pressure at this time. With everything that is happening, we are listening to the people.  They are speaking and having their voices heard.

As snipers continue to point guns at us, we continue our colonial Canadian style negotiations.  It takes a lot of courage to deliberate while heavily armed police practically breathe down our necks.  Talks will resume on Monday with the OPP and our delegates will be sitting at the table.  It is the beginning.  We have won on so many levels.  Don't be discouraged, keep the vigils going and continue to support us.  What we are doing affects all Onkwehonweh people and our allies as the law is intended for all.

Janie Jamieson is one of our articulate spokespersons.  The OPP have stated they will arrest her if she attends the negotiations.  Their injunction is illegal and should be set aside.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty appointed former Ontario Premier David Peterson to be the negotiator for Ontario.  He’s a lawyer and so he will probably try to impose foreign laws on us.  Our position is that the clan mothers have to be at the table; our designates from the site need to be at the table; and we want a letter of confirmation from the Crown that the federal and provincial representatives are delegated to speak on Her Majesty’s behalf on a nation-to-nation level.  Mr. Peterson better have his letter from the Queen.  Otherwise we have no business talking to him.

So far the Six Nations blockade has received messages of support from our brothers, sisters, friends, allies and organizations all over the world – Canada, United States, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Venezuela, New Zealand, Australia, China, Phillipines, Palestine, Iran, Punjab, Germany, France, Britain, Guyana, South Africa and all cross Turtle Island.

The Six Nations people and those who are standing in solidarity with us are still on the site of the illegal housing project in Caledonia.  There have been blockades, protests and rallies in Vancouver, Calgary, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal , St. John’s Newfoundland and New York City.  We have told our story around the world on regular and internet radio.  We have received written support from unions like the Canadian Auto Workers, Canadian Labor Congress and many native and non-native organizations.  The alternative media has been updating and keeping the details out there.  Listen to “Native America Calling” on 106.5 in Toronto or www.aboriginalradio.com at 6:00 EDT to get an update.

We're trying to get a little rest.  Aw, do we have to listen to the OPP moaning and groaning, “Gee, ma, I wanna go home.  I’m tired and I wanna go to bed.  I got ordered to fight the Injuns about a week ago, and it went right to my head.  So now I want another order so I can go home”.  Our chorus is, “Gee, guys, why don’t you just go to your home on native land?”

Nia:wen to all.

“GUNBOAT DIPLOMACY” AT SIX NATIONS "

“GUNBOAT DIPLOMACY” AT SIX NATIONS - TRAGIC MISMANAGEMENT OF BOTH INDIGENOUS AND CANADIAN RIGHTS.

MNN.  April 28, 2006.  Friday, 10:30 pm.  Shotgun diplomacy is much more harmful than people realize.  Instead of providing leadership to the Canadian people that it represents, and reassuring the Indigenous people of Six Nations, Canada sent in armed forces.  Barricades and yellow tape are blocking peoples’ way for 50 square miles.  There are three helicopters flying overhead, extra heavily armed police all over the place and a raucous crowd of 300 Caledonians are trying to rush the Six Nations barricades.  Everybody’s nerves are on edge.  People feel like they’re caught in the middle of a “war” zone.

The issue is a longstanding Indigenous land theft by Canada that has to be rectified.  We are not letting it go on any longer.  We want Canada to obey its laws and keep its promises.  Bringing in armed forces has ignited violence by the non-native citizens of nearby Caledonia.  They feel trapped, confined and need to blame someone.  The police and military are happy to have this action.  It is less boring than standing around.  They have a chance to use their armaments and other fancy toys.

This misbehavior of the citizens of Caledonia keeps the spotlight off the cops who carried out an unprovoked pre-dawn attack on the Six Nations people on April 20th.  It makes it seem like their gonzo style is justified.  Actually it’s victimizing the people of Caledonia.

Is this how to do things?  We don’t think so.  If the Kaianereh’ko:wa/Great Law, our constitution, was used to solve the issue, fruitful discussions could be well underway by now.  The people of Caledonia need to take part in a ‘small condolence’ ceremony.  This is when people clean their eyes with a piece of soft leather so they can see the issue clearly; then they take an eagle feather and gently touch around their ears so that they will listen and hear the voices of the other people; and then they drink a glass of clear water so that their words will be as clear as the water and there are no sharp edges.  This ceremony helps calm people and keep their emotions under control so they can rationally discuss the issues at hand.

Some of the people of Caledonia are out of control.  The rest seem to be condoning or even encouraging the rioting and threats that are being made against us.  At a time like this they might cool down if no one confronted them.  Everyone would be wise to avoid going to Caledonia and doing business there for any reason.  They need to be left alone to return to their senses.  It may seem like a small thing to drop by there for a cup of coffee, especially when you’re thirsty and it is convenient.  But these people have gotten out of control!

It’s like putting a kid who is having a tantrum into a room by himself so they can think. Caledonians need to pull back their rowdies who are making it dangerous to go there.  They have temporarily forgotten how to interact calmly with people.  Maybe if they think about it, they can understand how our people have been racially boycotted.  They can see how we have been and continue to be attacked by the colonial government and kept under economic subjugation.

Successful neighborly relations depend on exchange and reciprocity as equals.  When one of the parties becomes disturbed, as the residents of Caledonia show us they have become, it’s obvious they need to be avoided.  They need space to think about the consequences of their actions.   The people of Chateauguay have never really recovered from their misbehavior during the Mohawk Oka Crisis of 1990.  They were so uncivilized that the people of Kahnawake stopped doing business with them.  A lot of businesses were ruined.  The Mohawk population was almost half the population of Chateauguay.  The Six Nations population is more than double that of Caledonia.

It’s understandable their nerves are on edge because neither Canada nor Ontario has offered them any reassurances about the Indigenous land on which they live. The colonial misappropriation of Six Nations land, funds and resources must be reversed through legal, thoughtful and fair negotiations with the People, not the Indian Act administration that Canada violently forced upon our people.  Obviously they haven’t done anything to solve the situation in over 150 years.

In the process of developing a consensual approach to managing inter-communituy relations, the Caledonian people should be included because their interests are involved.   According to the colonial custom that Canada continues to rely upon, the people of Caledonia will not have any say in the types of solutions that will be devised.  Whoever controls the Canadian and Ontario governments will dictate the solution and impose their will by force.  The current deployment of the police and army make this all too clear.  State use of force should be limited to making sure that everyone is treated equally and no one violates anyone else.  This escalating violence might never have happened if the Ontario Provincial Police hadn’t been there.  They made the first violent move by attacking the Six Nations people.  They are instigating violence rather than preventing it.

What we are seeing here is a demonstration of great differences in approach - the Indigenous way of solving problems consensually versus the colonial forced solutions without the people having a role.  The people of Caledonia have been suckered into behaving like hooligans.  They are seen as being at the bottom of the hierarchical colonial system that Canada and Ontario enforce.  This is feeding their frustration and leads them into misbehavior.

Everyone who is affected must be involved.  A solution requires their fully informed consent.  We want everybody to obey the laws, including Canada and Ontario.  No one can leave the table and get on with business as usual until a proper agreement is reached.  All promises and agreements that have been made with us must be fulfilled.  Business and community relations will have a sound equitable foundation.  We are tired of living under the burden of all of the unfulfilled promises that have been made by Canada, Ontario and Britain so they can live on our land and take all our resources.

Previously Caledonia citizens were decent neighbors.  We hope this relationship will be resumed in the future.  In the meantime, they need rest to calm their spirits.

In nature, when a bully is removed from the aquarium, life instantly improves for the rest.   Creating conditions of violence, suppressing the voice of the people, negotiating with the gun pointed at us and keeping the people of Caledonia victimized is meant to maintain the dominance of a few diseased minds.  They pretend that social order depends on them.  What would happen if all the armed forces left?  Canada would have to sit down and talk to us about their illegal actions and how they can be rectified.  Caledonians would stop being angry and society will flourish.

The use of force by the state is inflaming this situation.  Everyone has a concern that is not being validated.  We hope nothing happens.  We are all worried.  We need our brothers, sisters, friends and allies to stand with us and to set an example of self-restraint in the face of armed forces and the angry people of Caledonia who hover around us night and day.

Caledonia Divided:
Since February dozens of Six Nations protestors have occupied the Douglas Creek Estates Housing Project in Caledonia, Ontario. In the early morning hours of April 22nd, Ontario Provincial Police tried to move in and end the occupation but they were outnumbered and escorted off the grounds. What is the current status of this stand off? What is being talked about in the negotiations? Guests to be announced.

 The "feel" of Mother Earth

Good Morning Readers,

This day's Elder's Message is especially important to me. For the last few days I have thought of the joy of the growing season fast approaching. I love the feel of Mother Earth on my hands, the fresh special smell of Her perfume, the magic She performs when She changes a tine seed into a large plant with luscious fruits or vegetables on it. Or the transforming a small plant into a wonderful fragrant and beautiful mass of flowers.

This coming week I will able to interact with the Earth Mother as I spend another satisfying year watching the endless miracle of growth unfold before my eyes.

This year my son and I are concentrating on raising heirloom tomatoes and other vegetables. If anyone out there want to share seeds let me know please.

To a happy and fruitful growing season,

Tula

Elder's Meditation of the Day April 29

Elder's Meditation of the Day April 29
"The old people came literally to love the soil and they sat or reclined on the ground with a feeling of being close to a mothering power...The soil was soothing, strengthening, cleansing and healing..."
--Luther Standing Bear, OGLALA SIOUX
Have you ever noticed the relationship between children and the soil? Watch how happily they are touching the dirt. The children play in it and eat it. If you are stressed, go to a spot on the Earth, sit down, put your fingers in the dirt, dig in it. Wash your hands in the soil. When you touch it, notice what it does to your hands. Our bodies love to touch the Earth. Sometimes we get too busy and forget these simple things. Maybe you'll even want to plant a garden or flowers. These things are mentally healthy.

Great Spirit, today, let me touch the Earth so the Earth can touch me.
